Almost 50 years ago, medical pioneers took the leap into using new technology for minimally invasive surgery—surgery that uses small incisions and tools. “Minimally invasive laparoscopy was in its early stages and used mainly for diagnostic procedures,” said Randy Lewis, MD, a practicing gynecologist who recently retired from obstetrics after 23 years.
