New Health: A vision for sustainability

More than a decade ago, PwC’s Healthcast 2020 outlined what’s required to create a more sustainable future for the global healthcare industry, one that is affordable to citizens and governments alike and dedicated to achieving the continuous health and satisfaction of consumers. The report described the challenges facing the industry, from increasing demand and rising costs to uneven quality and misaligned incentives.1 At the time, some healthcare leaders were exploring solutions such as collaboration, consumerism, technology adoption, and better resource management. But today the industry is wrestling with the same challenges we highlighted in our 2005 report, including affordability, accessibility, and quality—and falling short.

Valley Health

Valley Health System is a not-for-profit organization serving the healthcare needs of people in and around an area known as the Top of Virginia, as well as parts of West Virginia and Maryland. Valley Health System was incorporated November 4, 1993 when Winchester Medical Center (WMC) and Warren Memorial Hospital (WMH), in Front Royal, partnered to serve the region. Headquartered in Winchester, Virginia, Valley Health now operates six hospitals: WMC, WMH, Shenandoah Memorial Hospital (SMH) in Woodstock, VA, Hampshire Memorial Hospital (HMH) in Romney, WV, Page Memorial Hospital (PMH) in Luray, VA, and War Memorial Hospital (WAR), in Berkeley Springs, WV. Valley Health System has a combined 610 licensed inpatient beds and 166 long-term care beds. The system is supported by more than 5,300 employees, and a medical staff of over 500.
