What UnitedHealthcare’s Texas Obamacare Exit Means For The State

UnitedHealthcare has told Texas insurance officials that it will be pulling its insurance plans from the federal exchanges in Texas next year. While its parent company UnitedHealth Group is the country’s largest insurer, what is its Texas footprint? The Kaiser Family Foundation published a chart detailing the impact to each state after United told investors that withdrawing from the exchanges was a possibility. About 48 percent of states will be left with three or more insurers after the departure, compared with the current rate of 64 percent . As it stands this enrollment period, only 7 percent of states have just one insurer—that’ll shoot up to 24 percent if United leaves completely. In all, about 1.4 million Americans will have access to only one insurer in their markets.
