The Trump administration has outlined an ambitious agenda to reduce prices for prescription drugs, as outlined in its May 2018 Blueprint. First, high and rising prescription drug costs are caused by many interrelated factors; therefore, a multipronged policy approach is required. Second, fostering greater price competition in the purchasing of prescription drugs will reduce costs. And third, consumers and purchasers do not have full insight into the prices that are negotiated through the prescription drug distribution system. (Policy analysts debate, however, the extent to which greater price transparency will produce lower negotiated drug prices.)
