Over the past twenty-five years most businesses have been revolutionized by the easy availability of cloud and mobile-based computing systems. These technologies have placed power and access into the hands of employees and customers, which in turn has created huge shifts in how transactions get done. Now the companies with the highest market value are both the drivers of and beneficiaries of this transition, notably Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet (Google), as well as their international rivals like Samsung, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba. Everyone uses their products every day, and the impact on our lives have been remarkable. Of course, this also impacts how businesses of all types are organized. Underpinning this transformation has been a change from enterprise-specific software to generic cloud-based services—sometimes called SMAC (Social/Sensors/Mobile/Analytics/Cloud). Applications such as data storage, sales management, email and the hardware they ran on were put into enterprises during the 80s and 90s in the client-server era (dominated by Intel and Microsoft). These have now migrated to cloud-based, on-demand services.
While many United States healthcare providers are returning to their in-person offices, many others are digging in to offer hybrid telehealth or exclusive telehealth practices moving forward. Understanding the future of telehealth reimbursement is then a pivotal issue. As a hub for telehealth consultants and trainers, the Telebehavioral Health Institute (TBHI) is receiving daily requests for assistance from behavioral health groups and independent practitioners seeking to position themselves for telehealth expansion optimally.
Artificial intelligence (AI) introduces some important concerns around data ownership, safety and security, and with so much at stake, meaningful regulation should be expected. The pharmaceutical, clinical treatment and medical device industries provide a precedent for how to protect data rights, privacy and security and drive innovation in an AI-empowered health care system. We should expect the continued growth of AI applications for health care as more uses and benefits of the technology surface. I’ve given more than 100 presentations on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) this past year. There’s no doubt these technologies are hot topics in health care that usher in great hope for the advancement of our industry. While they have the potential to transform patient care, quality and outcomes, there are also concerns about the negative impact this technology could have on human interaction, as well as the burden they could place on clinicians and health systems.
Over the past few weeks, I have written various posts on the experiences I have had with people whom I am working with as a Nurse Advocate. Each person came with unique issues related to their health. One patient had a suspected deep vein thrombosis, one was diagnosed with a reoccurrence of lung cancer, and the third person had a GI bleed with multiple co-morbidities that took months to identify and get under control. My role was to support them by helping them navigate the complex healthcare system by breaking through barriers each faced. These included getting appointments in a reasonable time frame, researching specialists who had the expertise to diagnose and treat them (and who were in their managed care network), working through the complexities of authorizations, payment, and reimbursement issues that accompanied each visit.
