ONC Targets Clinician Burnout, APIs, in Updated Health IT Playbook

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has released an updated version of the Health IT Playbook that focuses on aiding clinician burden, providing information on application programming interfaces (APIs) to improve interoperability, and helping healthcare providers comply with HIPAA. Developed with input from other HHS agencies, physicians, and stakeholders, the Health IT Playbook offers strategies for health organizations and clinicians to improve their understanding of EHRs and health IT. The Playbook has foremost been updated with information about clinician burden, specifically using an ONC and CMS report to draft goals to reduce clinician burden. That report called for a focus on reducing the time and effort required to record information in EHRs for providers, reducing the time and effort required to meet regulatory reporting requirements, and improving the functionality of EHRs.
