Cook Children's deep brain stimulation surgery

It seems like only yesterday that we performed our first deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. And when that patient took those first steps, we knew we could never stop moving forward either. Even as we pass our 100th surgery, it's just the beginning of our work as we continue to bring the most innovative DBS technology and techniques right here to Cook Children's. All to help our patients truly "move" toward a fuller, more active life, so kids can do what they do best, be kids.

Western Health

Western Health provides a combination of hospital and community-based health services to Melbourne's West. Western Health manages three acute public hospitals: Footscray Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, and the Williamstown Hospital. It also operates the Sunbury Day Hospital, and a Transition Care Program at Hazeldean in Williamstown. A wide range of community based services are also managed by Western Health, along with a large Drug and Alcohol Service.

How the COVID-19 pandemic has affected depression and anxiety around the world

A report in The Lancet provides the first global estimates of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health in 2020, and suggests an additional 53 million cases of major depressive disorder and 76 million cases of anxiety disorders were due to the pandemic. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders – which can increase the risk of other health outcomes such as suicide – were major contributors to the global burden of disease, affecting millions of men and women of all ages around the world. This study is the first to assess global impacts of the pandemic on major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, quantifying the prevalence and burden of the disorders by age, sex, and location in 204 countries and territories in 2020.
