ONC focused on privacy and usability in new app-based healthcare ecosystem

The Trump administration’s top health IT official told lawmakers his agency is acutely focused on ensuring that privacy and security remain pillars of future rulemaking as the healthcare industry transitions to an app-based economy. Lawmakers in the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health pressed Donald Rucker, M.D., who leads the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to explain how the agency plans to protect consumers from rogue actors stealing their health data. Rucker acknowledged that the agency must walk the line between privacy and accessibility, but said he was “extremely optimistic” that provisions of the 21st Century Cures Act would improve interoperability and allow patients to access health data on their smartphone.
