For years, hospitals had one primary tool for managing acute pain after surgery  opioids. That is no longer the case. Evidence-based interventions for pain management have emerged as hospitals continue to curb reliance on opioids. Enhanced recovery after surgery protocols have been shown to reduce length-of-stay, cut readmissions and improve pain management. Hospital leaders looking to improve patient recovery after surgery and limit patient opioid exposure should make ERAS protocols the cornerstone of their organization's approach to post-surgical pain management.
