Patient safety concerns lead to C-suite changes at NIH Clinical Center

  | May 11, 2016

Less than a month after an independent panel called for major patient safety reforms at the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Clinical Center, the facility's leadership is undergoing the most drastic restructuring in more than five decades, according to The Washington Post. NIH Director Francis Collins, M.D., this week announced plans for a new management team hewing closer to the typical hospital C-suite, recruiting leaders with backgrounds in patient safety and oversight. Collins is seeking three physicians to serve as the Bethesda, Maryland, facility's chief executive, chief medical officer and chief operating officer by the end of the year, according to the article. In the meantime, Center Director John Gallin, M.D., will retain his position.

When looking toward the future and planning the success of their practices, many practitioners have the tendency to focus on expanding their base, gaining new patients, and setting goals for growth to achieve their hopes and dreams. Of course, attracting new patients to your practice is a necessary part of growing. Without an influx of new patients, no practice can survive the normal attrition that happens in any office. But without a solid plan for retaining current patients, growth will not be possible, or will be minimized at best.
