Five use cases for the digital hospital of the future The future of health care delivery may look quite different than the hospital of today. The crowdsourcing simulation developed use cases in five categories Redefined care delivery Emerging features including centralized digital centers to enable decision making (think: air traffic control for hospitals), continuous clinical monitoring, targeted treatments (such as 3D printing for surgeries), and the use of smaller, portable devices will help characterize acute-care hospitals. Digital patient experience Digital and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies can help enable on-demand interaction and seamless processes to improve patient experience. Enhanced talent development Robotic process automation (RPA) and AI can allow caregivers to spend more time providing care and less time documenting it. Operational efficiencies through technology Digital supply chains, automation, robotics, and next-generation interoperability can drive operations management and back-office efficiencies. Healing and well-being designs The well-being of patients and staff members—with an emphasis on the importance of environment and experience in healing—will likely be important in future hospital designs. Many of these use-case concepts are already in play. And hospital executives should be planning how to integrate technology into newly-built facilities and retrofit it into older ones. Technology will likely underlie most aspects of future hospital care. But care delivery—especially for complex patients and procedures—may still require hands-on human expertise. Laying the foundation for the digital hospital of the future ​Building a digital hospital of the future can require investments in people, technology, processes, and premises. Most of these investments will likely be upfront. In the short term, hospital leadership may not see immediate returns on these investments. According to South Australia Health, identifying hotspots has helped them reveal patterns of infection and intervene quickly. Healthcare organisations deploy Qlik to improve hospital operations

“Healthcare institutions and government departments were suddenly dealing with unprecedented amounts of data sets to manage. These organisations have been forced to bolster their data analytics and data integration capabilities. Even healthcare institutions with robust analytics programs needed to further break down internal data silos, and bring more real-time, context-aware data to their decision-making,” observes Qlik country manager ANZ Paul Leahy. Qlik says its data analytics platform has been vital for healthcare organisations that manage changing data analytics. The organisations have embraced Active Intelligence, the ability to leverage real-time data to inform decision-making in rapidly changing market conditions. Qlik is enabling a significant number of healthcare organisations to make better sense of their data and put it to work, generating critical insights. They count New Zealand Ministry of Health, Justice Health and Forensic Mental Health Network, South Australia Health, Tasmanian Health Service, and Waikato District Health Board as clients. Tasmania Health Services builds a state-wide data view in four days When Tasmania recorded its first cases of COVID-19 in early March 2020, the state was already well-prepared to respond. The Tasmanian Health Service, which is responsible for operational analytics within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), had been developing near real-time dashboards for hospital data for the past 18-months. “Built on Qlik, the dashboard allows our emergency command centres to visualise hospital inpatients and show how many people have been moved across to COVID areas. We can also see how many are quarantined, how many are suspected, how many are undergoing testing, how many of those are positive cases, and where in the hospital are they located.” Tasmanian Health Service state manager David Deacon “Having this information in a single dashboard helped Tasmanian Health Service respond quickly to urgent situations, such as outbreaks in hospitals," Deacon says. South Australia Health manages the swift delivery of critical public health information South Australia Health has also invested in Qlik as it provided up-to-date data to guide their public health decisions. Qlik’s data visualisation and analytics solutions have underpinned South Australia Health’s COVID-19 incident response. Through automated reporting based on up-to-date data sets, Qlik has informed and supported the National Incident Room, the internal management team, and provided insights resources and vulnerable population. With more than 13 agencies involved, the centre has to quickly share data to coordinate the pandemic response from dashboards built with Qlik. According to South Australia Health, identifying hotspots has helped them reveal patterns of infection and intervene quickly. It is now looking to develop further Qlik applications to help with the vaccination rollout and provide better management of COVID patients in hospital. “Data is critical to decision making. However, setting up a robust data pipeline with governance structures in place takes work.” Qlik director of industry solutions for healthcare and public sector Charlie Farah “The public sector has a real opportunity to take the lessons learnt during COVID-19 to create new ways to serve citizens by using data as the foundation. Cross agency data sharing and promoting high rates of data literacy will be pivotal to achieving this," Farah concludes.
